Just because a medium or tool is available does not mean you should use it. Take some time to figure out what makes sense based on your goals as well as your strengths and weaknesses.Gary Vaynerchuk rocks at making video blogs. So do lots of other people. Just because video/YouTube can be an effective way of getting a message across does not mean everyone should use it.Exhibit A:
I like both of these companies but this video should not have seen the light of day. All three of them come across as awkward and the whole thing looks uncomfortably scripted.Gary V’s videos work because he communicates well via the platform. Rather than make a boring video, the founders of Nutshell and the CEO of ConstantContact would have been better off letting the press release do the talking. If they determined video was essential to their plans, they could’ve hired a host, edited in some visuals of their products or let their egos go and ask entertaining employees to make the video. They claim that their tools make work easier but watching that 6+ minutes did not portray any such image.
You can’t be all things to all people so don’t feel you need to use every available platform. Play to your strengths and focus on getting your message to your current and potential audience using the tools that best fit you.
